Politico reported the information.According to two sources close to the outlet, Witkoff is pushing for the lifting of restrictions currently in place against Russia’s energy sector. Meanwhile, Interior Secretary Doug Burgum supports further pushing Moscow out of the energy market, opening opportunities for U.S. energy exports.Politico notes that energy remains a key strategic area where the U.S. and Russia could cooperate. Moscow is already negotiating with Washington to restore the Nord Stream pipeline and seeks to attract American investors to the project. However, this raises concerns in Europe.One EU representative noted that U.S. President Trump and Russian leader Putin “want to divide the European energy market and create [separate] spheres of influence.”Democratic Senators Jeanne Shaheen, Elizabeth Warren, and Chris Coons have initiated an investigation into the Trump administration’s failure to impose new sanctions on Russia for over five months for its war in Ukraine.
