By targeting Ukraine’s recruitment centers, Russia is trying to instill fear, according to Serhiy Bratchuk, spokesman for the Ukrainian Volunteer Army, speaking on Espreso TV.“The Russians may be basing this on their own experience with mobilization and military commissariats,” Bratchuk said. “Unlike Ukraine, their system isn’t as digitized. For Russians, government buildings, especially military offices, are symbols of authority. If a local office shuts down and everyone goes to war, it disrupts what they see as the normal order of life. Maybe that’s what they’re aiming for. But in doing so, they’ve made another miscalculation.”He added that these strikes are also meant to create psychological pressure. “The goal is to make people question whether they should go to enlist — ‘What if a missile hits?’ These fears are exactly what the Russians are trying to provoke.”Serhiy Bratchuk also addressed tensions involving staff at the Territorial Centers for Recruitment and Social Support.“There’s a certain group of people who, unfortunately, have been affected by the human factor, especially poor communication, which has fueled negative perceptions about how these centers operate,” he said. “But in reality, the enemy is trying to drive a wedge between members of the military.”Bratchuk reminded that the Centers for Recruitment and Social Support are military management bodies. He stressed that their employees are part of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.“They are part of the Armed Forces of Ukraine,” said Serhiy Bratchuk, referring to employees of the Territorial Centers for Recruitment and Social Support. “The goal is to drive a wedge between people and deepen divisions. We can see how bots on social media are working hard to split society, even to the extent that I won’t repeat some of the things being written.”He urged the public to remember that those working in the recruitment centers are not outsiders: “They are your brothers, sisters, and parents. If you wish harm upon them, then our special services may have to respond to those bots. We do have the capability. This is clearly an attempt to manipulate the emotional state of our society.”Bratchuk emphasized that despite the sensitive nature of the recruitment center issue, Russian efforts to divide Ukrainian society will fail.“The Russians will keep attacking their own people like slaves — they don’t understand, and never will, that in moments like these, we can still unite. I believe they won’t succeed in dividing us completely. That will not happen,” he said.On July 6, Russian forces used a drone to strike a Center for Recruitment and Social Support building in Kremenchuk, Poltava region. The next day, on July 7, similar drone attacks targeted recruitment centers in Kharkiv and Zaporizhzhia.According to the Center for Countering Disinformation, Russia is using a Telegram bot to collect the coordinates of these buildings. In response to the ongoing attacks, Ukraine’s territorial recruitment centers may change their operating format to reduce risks.
