"We will send more weapons. We have to do this. They need to be able to defend themselves," Trump stated during a public speech, commenting on the escalation from Russia.Trump's position shifted due to the "very strong blows" Ukraine has endured. He mentioned the massive missile attacks on Kyiv, Kharkiv, Dnipro, and other cities, as well as the numerous civilian casualties.Following the president's statement, the Pentagon confirmed that, under his orders, the U.S. had already begun sending additional weapons to Ukraine, including air defense systems, ammunition, and equipment to protect critical infrastructure. This is Trump’s first official statement on resuming large-scale military aid to Ukraine since his return to the White House. It signals political changes in Washington. The increasing intensity of Russian attacks and growing pressure from European allies, particularly Germany and France, are forcing the White House to shift its approach. This is also a result of Congressional influence, where both Republicans and Democrats are increasingly voicing joint calls for active support to Ukraine. This is why I constantly emphasize the importance of enhancing dialogue with Congress! For Ukraine, this is a critical window of opportunity that must be used to strengthen defense capabilities and restore strategic dialogue with the U.S. Communication with 5-6 managers was a failure, and the negotiation team needs to be reinforced with professional diplomats who do not cause frustration in Washington.Kyiv should systematically work on guarantees of long-term support—regardless of personal fluctuations in the White House.SourceAbout the author: Iryna Herashchenko, Member of Parliament of Ukraine, European Solidarity faction. The editorial board does not always share the views expressed by blog or column authors.
