Kremlin expanding media influence in Africa through TASS and RT — Ukraine’s intel

This was reported by Ukraine’s military intelligence (HUR).According to intelligence data, Russian propaganda channels now broadcast in over 40 African countries in six languages. Since June 2025, content is also being translated into Portuguese for audiences in Mozambique and Angola. By year-end, RT plans to launch Amharic-language broadcasts targeting Ethiopia.“Russian propaganda is a global threat aimed at one thing — territorial, resource, and cultural expansion by the aggressor,” said Andriy Yusov, spokesperson for Ukraine’s HUR.RT’s presence across the continent is growing fast. In just two years, the number of African partner TV channels has doubled from 30 to 60.RT is also running training programs for African journalists. In 2024, over 1,000 media workers are set to receive training based on Russian standards. On-site courses in Addis Ababa began in June 2025.Russia plans to expand these programs to more countries. To support this, the Kremlin is hiring staff to lead “correspondence points” while also managing local training centers.TASS is also extending its footprint in Africa. It plans to open correspondent offices in Ethiopia, Senegal, Algeria, the Democratic Republic of Congo, and more. Hiring for these roles is being overseen by Russia’s FSB.Meanwhile, starting this school year, schools in Ukraine’s occupied Kherson region are expected to introduce the role of “child education advisor,” tasked with spreading propaganda and reporting to Russian-installed authorities.
