According to several EU diplomats familiar with the discussions, speaking to European Pravda, the Coreper meeting on July 13 saw prolonged debates over the sanctions.Slovakia maintains its position firmly, demanding guarantees from the European Commission that it will not face economic losses after the EU fully phases out Russian gas by 2028. Until such assurances are provided, Slovakia intends to block the sanctions.Meanwhile, Malta has voiced opposition specifically to the proposal of lowering the price cap on Russian oil. As a country with a significant tanker fleet and an economy reliant on oil transportation, Malta, alongside Greece and Cyprus, rejects the idea of reducing the threshold price. At a recent meeting of EU ambassadors, Malta was the sole country to insist on rejecting this part of the package.EU diplomats told European Pravda that the European Commission’s current proposal envisions a dynamic price cap on Russian oil set at 15% below the average market price over the previous three months, with revisions scheduled every six months.
