“They're coming in from Germany and then replaced by Germany. And in all cases, the United States gets paid back in full,” said the American president. In addition, the United States will provide Ukraine with Patriot air defense systems. According to Trump, the United States will transfer them through a mechanism whereby European allies will pay for the purchase and shipment, and the United States will replenish their reserves in return. A total of 17 batteries could be transferred “very soon.”This expanded U.S. military and technical support comes amid Western media reports suggesting a possible halt in military aid to Ukraine. In my view, these reports are part of a large-scale information and psychological operation by Russian intelligence services, targeting both Ukrainian society and Western allies ahead of an expected phone call between Trump and Putin. These are classic Russian “active measures” in the information space, aimed at shaping negative public sentiment. To this end, the narrative about a supposed suspension of U.S. military-technical aid to Ukraine was deliberately amplified.Significantly, this information “leak” appeared in Politico — a publication that has previously published controversial stories based on anonymous sources. Unfortunately, many media outlets picked up the story without verifying it.In the fourth year of the war, we must learn a key lesson: if serious military and political matters are attributed to “informed” but unnamed sources, that information most likely falls into the category of an information and psychological operation orchestrated by Russian intelligence services. The main goal of this "leak" was clear: to exert information pressure on the Ukrainian leadership. At the same time, the first to comment on it were high-ranking Russian officials - another strong indicator that the message is part of a Russian information and psychological special operation. It is also worth noting that this operation was prepared in advance. After all, just a day earlier, media outlets were spreading claims that Kyiv would become the most dangerous city in Ukraine due to the alleged depletion of air defense forces.Another indicator that Russian intelligence services are behind this is the massive combined airstrike on the Ukrainian capital - the decision-making center - carried out by the aggressor state on July 4. At the same time, all of this unfolded as if to confirm the words of the Kremlin leader, who declared he “will not stop.”In contrast, the so-called “suspension” of U.S. assistance has been refuted by the actual deliveries of American air defense systems, Patriot missiles, F-16 fighter jets, and Abrams tanks. Following the penultimate call between Trump and the Kremkin chief, the U.S. sharply intensified the re-export of weapons from NATO countries. At present, the issue of supplying military equipment is being addressed, in part, through funding from Ukraine's European partners. However, without the consent of the United States, not a single piece of weaponry produced in that country can be transferred to other nations. It is worth noting that re-export is permitted if a third country is involved in an armed conflict and is exercising its right to self-defense as enshrined in international law, and if the UN Security Council has established a violation of the prohibition on the use of force, in accordance with international law and the UN Charter. In our case, we are talking about the transfer of American-made weapons, which the Biden administration had not previously allowed. For example, back in October 2024, during President Biden's term, Australia promised to provide Ukraine with 49 M1A1 Abrams tanks as military aid. It was only during Trump's term that this issue moved forward.According to Major General Christian Freuding, who heads the Special Staff for Ukraine at the German Defense Ministry, Ukraine has received an additional hundred anti-aircraft missiles to the American-made Patriot systems that Germany had promised. To understand the scope of Germany's military assistance, I will give the current rate of production of Patriot missiles per year: 240 GEM-T units at Raytheon's facilities and 550 MSE units at Lockheed Martin's facilities.Norway has announced the transfer of NASAMS air defense systems to Ukraine. In addition, Norway will facilitate the production of missiles for NASAMS in Ukraine. The Norwegian defense minister emphasized that the NASAMS system plays a crucial role in protecting critical infrastructure and saving lives in Ukraine every day, which is why the Norwegian government considers it important to fund the development of more affordable missiles for these systems. These words were reinforced by the signing of a Memorandum of Cooperation between Kongsberg Defense & Aerospace and a Ukrainian company to develop and manufacture such air defense missiles in Ukraine.Belgium has announced that it will try to deliver F-16s to Ukraine even earlier than the deadline. Earlier, Belgian Prime Minister Bart De Wever said that the delivery of F-16 fighter jets to Ukraine would be delayed until next year due to the delay in the delivery of F-35s from the United States, which were supposed to replace them.Italy, which had previously denied having any weapons to give to Ukraine, unexpectedly announced that it plans to give Ukraine 400 M113 armored personnel carriers as part of another military aid package. But most importantly, it is transferring a SAMP/T air defense missile system, the European equivalent of the American Patriot. In addition, during his recent visit to Ukraine, the German Defense Minister said that Germany has already allocated €7 billion to help Ukraine this year and plans to allocate an additional €1.9 billion. According to him, part of these funds will be used to finance the production of Ukrainian long-range weapons. And all this is happening after Trump's penultimate conversation with Putin. So what kind of cessation of military-technical assistance are they trying to put in our heads? It's called intensifying military-technical assistance, not stopping it.To summarize: all this hysteria around the termination of military and technical assistance was organized by the Russian side on the eve of Trump's last conversation with Putin in order to force Ukraine to make territorial concessions.Instead, if Russia, represented by its dictator, continues to demonstrate "intransigence," Trump is likely to fulfill his campaign promise: "I will give Ukraine enough weapons to force Russia to the negotiating table."This is not just support for Ukraine, but a clear game of attrition. The current increase in the pace of U.S. military and technical support for Ukraine is not Trump's “change of heart,” but a well-thought-out multi-pronged strategy aimed at forcing Russia to the negotiating table. And this is no longer just a military operation, but a complex geopolitical one.Specially for EspresoAbout the author.
