Military expert Oleksandr Kovalenko has analyzed the Russian losses in a post on his Telegram channel. In a striking development, July is on track to become the month with the fewest Russian tank and armored fighting vehicle (AFV) losses since the spring of 2023. According to recent reports, Russia’s losses in these categories are expected to hit record lows, with the number of destroyed tanks potentially reaching the smallest figure in over a year. The situation is even more dramatic for AFVs, where an all-time low may be set. However, experts caution that this decline in losses is not a sign of battlefield success or technological advancement. Instead, it reflects a critical depletion of Russia’s armored reserves. Most Soviet-era equipment stockpiles have been exhausted, leaving only vehicles that are difficult or impossible to restore. While Russia continues to produce new tanks and AFVs, the output is insufficient to replace even monthly losses, let alone build up reserves. This shortage has forced the Russian military to ration its remaining armored vehicles, marking a new phase of acute scarcity. As the crisis deepens, questions are being raised about whether Russia might seek support from allies, such as North Korea, to replenish its dwindling arsenal. On July 16, the Russian army lost at least 1,190 soldiers. Ukrainian defenders also destroyed 43 artillery systems and 4 tanks.
