Defense Express military expert Ivan Kyrychevskyi stated this on Espreso TV.“When it comes to the supply of Patriot systems, I think it’s worth starting with the area of responsibility that Ukraine itself could have taken on. This area of responsibility looks like this: if, at the highest official level, even during Donald Trump’s presidency, there were statements about the willingness to spend $10 billion and buy Patriot SAMs wherever possible, then it would have been better to implement that. Because, if you analyze the available information, the most likely and worst-case scenario is that Patriots for us will be taken from Switzerland. At first glance, there’s nothing terrible about this. However, the Swiss ordered these Patriots back in 2021. Also, although Switzerland seems distant and neutral to us, and we should have been monitoring this country, interesting processes are taking place there. The point is that various transit routes are concentrated in the country, which should be used for NATO military logistics. Accordingly, these Patriot systems are definitely needed there,” Kyrychevskyi explained. The expert noted that Ukraine should also show initiative in the matter of air defense supplies and try to find a country where these SAM systems could be purchased.“The situation where, six months before the delivery of Patriot systems, the Pentagon announces that Switzerland will receive them later could spoil not only our ability to travel to Switzerland for various forums. In principle, we find ourselves in a not very good dilemma, where Trump wants to arm Ukraine at Europe’s expense. And we, as a country, are not showing any initiative in this situation. As for the coincidence that Trump spoke about 17 Patriot launchers and Switzerland ordered the same number, that also somehow matches up. So it turns out that the Americans themselves don’t fully understand what they’re talking about when it comes to system installations and the like,” he added.Donald Trump, during a meeting with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, announced agreements on the supply of weapons to Ukraine. On July 15, media reported that almost all U.S. weapons that the North Atlantic Alliance will purchase for transfer to Ukraine are ready for immediate shipment. At the same time, Trump stated on July 16 that the first Patriot air defense systems are already being shipped to allies who will purchase them from Washington for transfer to Ukraine. The U.S. Department of Defense has informed Switzerland about delays in the delivery of its ordered Patriot air defense systems due to the prioritization of aid to Ukraine, with a focus on air defense. At the same time, Switzerland is not the only country affected by the review of delivery priorities.
