With their help, Ukraine — once a weak country plagued by authoritarian practices — was meant to transform into a strong, democratic, and lawful state.That’s why, after the 2014 Revolution of Dignity, our partners in the EU and the U.S. invested heavily in building a systemic fight against corruption. They, along with the majority of Ukrainians, recognized corruption as a major obstacle preventing Ukraine from becoming genuinely independent. We all wanted to see Ukraine free of corruption, and independent anti-corruption bodies gave us that chance. Today’s vote takes that chance away.In fact, the parliament put its own interests above those of society. In the midst of a difficult and exhausting war, this growing divide in worldview between the people and the ruling elite carries clear risks. We cannot fight against Russia while simultaneously building a mini-Russia at home.Today, a country at war faces a government that demands: don’t get in the way of its theft.SourceAbout the author.
