Spiegel reported the information, citing sources in the German government. The media outlet recalls that Russia is massively attacking Ukraine with drones, missiles, and hypersonic weapons, trying to destroy its critical infrastructure. According to Ukraine, the most effective defense is the American Patriot system. Since May, Germany has been actively trying to help Ukraine obtain these systems. Pistorius proposed that the U.S. buy two Patriot complexes to transfer them to Ukraine. Chancellor Friedrich Merz also discussed this with U.S. President Donald Trump, who agreed to sell five batteries. However, the transfer process has proven to be complicated and slow. The U.S. wants European countries to temporarily hand over their Patriot systems and then receive new ones from the American manufacturer RTX Corporation. But the first such new battery may arrive in at least eight months. The delivery of all subsequent ones will take even longer. At a meeting of the Ukraine Defense Contact Group, which Pistorius held with his British counterpart, the conditions under which countries could temporarily transfer their Patriot systems were discussed. Germany, Norway, Sweden, and the Netherlands are ready to contribute financially, but a decision on which countries will actually transfer the complexes has not yet been made. The plan is to find up to five Patriot systems that could be sent to Ukraine. At the same time, it is necessary to ensure that these countries do not lose their ability to defend themselves and meet NATO requirements. This issue is currently being analyzed by NATO military experts, and final decisions will be made by ministers based on clear and reliable commitments. On July 21, the United States and Germany reached an agreement to provide Ukraine with five Patriot air defense systems.
