Political adviser in the European Parliament Petar Tanev stated this during the European Space program with Yuriy Fizer on Espreso TV."Since the beginning of the war, the most active people—representatives of Bulgarian civil society—have consistently supported Ukraine. These are people who appealed to the government and our authorities, regardless of their statements like ‘we shouldn't provoke Russia because we're a small country’ and other similar propaganda narratives. What we’re witnessing now is a war of values, a war between the European path and a path of authoritarianism and dictatorship.I am proud to be one of those who stood on the streets with Bulgarian citizens to publicly support Ukraine. I did it as an activist, and now I do it at the political level. As for our government in Bulgaria—it’s a complicated matter," Tanev said.According to the political adviser, Bulgaria—officially—does support Ukraine. However, the country has been facing a continuous political crisis, and repeated elections have made it hard to determine the future of its security policy."We finally have a government now. I don’t want more elections in our country. This is a chance to continue building constructive relations with Ukraine. But there is an issue that deeply concerns both the Bulgarian community in Ukraine and Ukrainians and Bulgarians more broadly. Since the beginning of the war, Bulgaria has not had an ambassador in Ukraine, and that’s very strange. According to my sources, the problem lies with Bulgarian President Rumen Radev, who is known for constantly repeating Kremlin propaganda and narratives—saying this isn’t a war, but a so-called ‘special operation,’ claiming that Ukraine can’t win because Russia is too powerful, and so on. So it’s unfortunate that, at the diplomatic level, I don’t see real cooperation between Bulgaria and Ukraine," Tanev emphasized. In Bulgaria, the parliament has approved a declaration prohibiting the participation of the country’s armed forces in combat operations in Ukraine and calling for a lasting and just peace.
