Defense Express military expert Ivan Kyrychevskyi commented on this issue on Espreso TV."Strictly speaking, neither side has lied, it's just a matter of which part of the truth they shared. When we discussed the statements by Hegseth and Pistorius, they were talking about Patriot systems that could be delivered relatively quickly. For example, if you look at Switzerland, even under contract terms, it would have to wait six years for its systems. So, it seems they are still thinking in peacetime terms, not in terms of needing them yesterday, so Hegseth and Pistorius, in their own way, did not lie. On the other hand, the German media that writes about spring 2026 is also right, simply because the first Patriot battery that was being manufactured under contract for Switzerland will now be transferred to us, and we will not receive it before spring 2026," he said.Ivan Kyrychevskyi noted that Ukraine needs to work more persistently to obtain Patriot systems."We've found ourselves in a situation where some misleading political statement was made, like 'weeks.' Well, maybe if someone meant that half a year is 25 weeks, then yes, weeks. But, you know, measuring delivery times like that is rather sly. On the other hand, this brings us back to the issue we discussed before: from our side, we need greater and more persistent initiative, rather than just waiting for the systems to arrive and wringing our hands that they aren't here," he said. The military expert emphasized that the lack of a sufficient number of Patriot systems means there are still entire uncovered regions in Ukraine."The fewer Patriots we have, the more the situation persists where there are entire districts and regions in Ukraine that are not covered by such systems, including from ballistic missiles. This will result in corresponding losses among the military, civilians, and infrastructure. We've developed this semi-magical thinking that if we just don't hold mass gatherings or don't gather people at military facilities or training centers, then the Russians won't strike with ballistic missiles. But the problem is, the Russians strike with ballistic missiles everywhere we can't defend ourselves. And even if you spread everyone out one by one, unfortunately, the Russians will still strike there. This is the price we pay for having to wait for Patriots until spring 2026," Ivan Kyrychevskyi noted. On July 21, the United States and Germany had reached an agreement to provide Ukraine with five Patriot air defense systems, to be delivered as soon as possible. On July 23, it was reported that the first of the five promised Patriot air defense systems may arrive in Ukraine in at least 8 months, that is, next year.
