General Ben Hodges, the former U.S. Army Europe Commander, said this in an interview with Antin Borkovskyi, host of the Studio West program on Espreso TV.“Ukraine has already proven it can hold off Russia. After eleven and a half years of war, Russia controls only about 19% of Ukrainian territory. Russian air forces avoid flying in Ukrainian airspace, and the Black Sea Fleet has virtually disappeared from the operational arena. Russia has failed to disrupt the supply of equipment and ammunition to Ukraine from Poland. There is no evidence that the Russian army is capable of breaking through or breaching Ukrainian defenses,” the general noted. At the same time, he said, Ukraine currently lacks the resources to decisively push Russia out. So without significant external changes, the situation on the front is likely to remain similar over the next year.“External change could come either through strong Western pressure to cut off Russia’s oil and gas exports to India and China, or through large-scale deliveries of high-precision long-range weapons to Ukraine. Russia cannot defeat Ukraine. All it can do is keep killing Ukrainian civilians, hoping the West grows tired. I doubt the Russian economy can endure several more years of such a war, especially if its energy exports are blocked,” Hodges concluded. On July 25, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Russia isn’t making real gains on the front, though the pressure is still on everywhere. He called the sabotage in Pokrovsk and attempts to get into the Dnipropetrovsk region more of a PR win for the Russian military than anything else.
