Early on August 11, Ukrainian FP-1 drones successfully targeted the Arzamas Instrument-Making Plant in Russia’s Nizhny Novgorod region, a critical facility producing vital components for Russian missile systems. The strike, which began around 3:55 a.m. local time, involved multiple drones flying at very low altitude. Witnesses reported hearing several explosions and a strong blast, with subsequent videos showing fire and smoke inside the plant’s buildings. Although the fire was later extinguished, the attack disrupted the plant’s operations.According to Defense Express, the plant plays a critical role in Russia’s missile production, manufacturing key components for several long-range missile systems, including the Kh-101 cruise missile, the high-speed Kh-32, and the guided Kh-59. As part of Russia’s military-industrial complex, the plant specializes in “the development and production of gyroscopic devices, control systems, onboard electronic computers, steering drives, control and verification complexes,” according to the Ukrainian Defense Intelligence’s database.Videos from the attack notably show a lack of any air defense response — even small arms fire was absent — allowing the drones to hit the target unchallenged. The strike resulted in a fire, with visible damage to the plant’s front building and internal areas, disrupting the plant’s operations. The plant produces crucial components such as the K-051(M) inertial navigation system for Kh-32 missiles, BDG-1M damping gyroscope blocks used in Kh-101 missiles, and the ASL-1 liquidation system for the Kh-59 missile family. These elements are essential for the guidance and control of Russia’s advanced missile weapons. The disruption of this facility, while not resulting in total destruction, aligns with Ukraine’s tactical focus on hitting component factories — sites that are often less defended than final assembly plants but vital to the production chain. Arzamas, located about 700 kilometers from Ukraine, hosts several military-industrial enterprises, yet despite its distance and presumed security, it remains vulnerable to Ukrainian strikes.
