Grave mistake to sideline EU in Ukraine peace process

Ukraine will be forced to make territorial concessions. Putin will remain uncompromising, while the international community is unwilling to fight for Ukrainian lands or deliver a decisive blow to the pseudo-empire needed to stop border violations and breaches of international law.I believe the statement that the EU will be excluded from future negotiations is very dangerous for Ukraine. Ukraine must maintain a strong position because this concerns European security. The presence of European partners is a crucial element for lasting peace, especially now, as the responsibility for military support to Kyiv increasingly falls on Europe. If it is true that the EU has agreed to the future trilateral format of meetings Washington–Kyiv–Moscow, then this is a major strategic mistake for Ukraine and for all of Europe. This must be openly discussed with our partners. Since 2008, far too many mistakes have played into Putin’s plans to start new wars, pause to rebuild forces, seize more territory, and commit further atrocities. Europe needs to overcome its infantilism and abandon the policy of “buying time at Ukraine’s expense.” This cynical approach is a losing strategy. It’s time to stand firmly alongside Ukraine — not just by supplying weapons.Of course, we don’t know all the details of the shuttle talks and behind-the-scenes meetings in Moscow, so I speak only about what has been publicly announced. Undoubtedly, Ukraine longs for peace — our people are dying, and our cities lie in ruins. But this must be true peace, not capitulation. For Putin, “peace” still means nothing more than Kyiv’s surrender. Unfortunately, that reality has not changed.SourceAbout the author: Iryna Herashchenko, Member of Parliament of Ukraine, “European Solidarity” factionThe editorial team does not always share the opinions expressed by blog authors.
