The Alliance’s press service reported this on August 13."Germany announced today (13 August 2025) that it will fund a $500 million package of military equipment and munitions for Ukraine sourced from the United States, under NATO’s new Prioritized Ukraine Requirements List (PURL) initiative," the statement said.NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte welcomed the funding.“I commend Germany for stepping up once again. This delivery will help Ukraine defend itself against Russian aggression,” said the Secretary General. “Germany is the largest European contributor of military aid to Ukraine, and today’s announcement further underlines its commitment to help the Ukrainian people defend their freedom and sovereignty,” he added. Background: The Priority Ukraine Requirements List (PURL) is a new NATO mechanism for providing aid to Kyiv. Based on Ukraine’s requests, a priority list of weapons and ammunition will be drawn up, approved by NATO’s Supreme Allied Commander Europe, and funded by Alliance members or partners.Defense Express, citing sources, reported that such aid packages will be announced regularly, with an average value of around $500 million each.“This way, Ukraine will be able to obtain U.S. weapons and technology paid for by Europeans. While this may not seem as attractive as direct U.S. aid, it will allow Ukraine to receive and maintain critical systems,” the outlet added. On Wednesday, August 13, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy met with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz in Berlin to discuss boosting defense support and strengthening Ukraine’s air defenses.
