Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk wrote about this on X.“A conversation among European leaders has ended, during which we assessed the information provided by President Trump and the results of the Alaska meeting. Together with Emmanuel Macron, Friedrich Merz, Keir Starmer, and Giorgia Meloni, we listened to President Zelenskyy’s view on the matter and prepared a joint statement,” he said.He later published the statement, in which European leaders noted Trump’s efforts aimed at ending the war against Ukraine and achieving a just and lasting peace."The leaders welcomed President Trump’s efforts to stop bloodshed in Ukraine, to end Russia’s aggressive war of invasion, and to achieve a just and lasting peace," the statement said.According to Trump, “there is no deal until there is a deal.” The next step, under his plan, must be negotiations with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, which will take place soon. European leaders emphasized their readiness to cooperate with Trump and Zelenskyy in preparing a trilateral summit with Europe’s support. The statement separately underscores the need to provide Ukraine with “ironclad security guarantees” to defend its sovereignty and territorial integrity. European leaders welcomed Trump’s declaration that the United States is ready to offer such guarantees and stressed that the coalition of allies is prepared to play an active role in this process. At the same time, the document makes clear: Ukraine’s Armed Forces and its international cooperation cannot be restricted, and Russia must not have a veto right over Ukraine’s future accession to the EU or NATO.“Ukraine will make decisions about its own territory. International borders cannot be changed by force,” the joint statement reads.EU leaders reaffirmed their determination to continue supporting Ukraine, strengthening sanctions against Russia, and putting pressure on its war economy until a just and lasting peace is achieved.“Ukraine can count on our unwavering solidarity in the pursuit of peace that safeguards the vital security interests of Ukraine and Europe,” the statement stressed.Zelenskyy’s reaction“The positions are clear. We need to achieve real peace that will be lasting, not just another pause between Russian invasions,” Zelenskyy emphasized.Among the immediate steps, he named the urgent need for a ceasefire — both on the battlefield and against Ukraine’s port infrastructure — as well as the release of all captured military personnel and civilians, and the return of children abducted by Russia. He said thousands of Ukrainians remain in captivity and all must return home. The president also underlined the importance of maintaining pressure on Russia.“In my conversation with President Trump, I said there must be stronger sanctions if there is no trilateral meeting or if Russia evades an honest end to the war. Sanctions are an effective tool,” Zelenskyy noted. He also stressed the need for reliable and long-term security guarantees involving both Europe and the U.S. According to Zelenskyy, no issues, including territorial ones, can be decided without Ukraine’s participation. The head of state thanked international partners for their support and positively assessed the earlier statement of European leaders.“Today’s statement by European leaders strengthens our position. We continue working together: Europeans, Americans, and everyone in the world who wants peace and stability in international relations,” he said.
