Empty results of Alaska meeting

1. Trump directly states, "There is no agreement." Honestly, I was expecting at least some appearance of results - for example, an announcement of a short-term ceasefire, a pledge to refrain from striking civilian infrastructure until the end of August, or at least something vague like, "we just agreed not to start a nuclear war." But there was nothing. At the final press conference, Putin read from a paper, which means he said exactly what he had planned to say before the talks. In other words, nothing in his position changed: "We are for peace, but the root causes of the conflict must be addressed."Trump appeared confused and didn’t even speak first, even though, since the meeting was held in the U.S., he should have had the opening word as the host of the event.2. One might assume there were some secret agreements. However, the cancellation of the lunch clearly shows that nothing of the sort happened. Lunch is essentially a continuation of negotiations in an expanded format, after the presidents have agreed on certain key points. So, if there had been any secret agreements they didn’t want to disclose, the lunch would not have been canceled. For example, last time, a planned lunch was canceled on February 28 following the meeting with Zelenskyy.3. Although the Americans tried to lower expectations in their statements before the meeting, it seems they themselves did not expect such a failure. Otherwise, lunch would have taken place.“It’s clear that the U.S. had prepared additional proposals that, from Trump’s perspective, no one would refuse - including Trump himself. But Putin showed that he is so fixated on Ukraine that no other proposals interest him.”For the Americans, this is puzzling, as they cannot understand how, under conditions where the economy is collapsing and spheres of influence (from the Caucasus to India) are being eroded, the only thing that interests the country's leader is how many kilometers remain to Pokrovsk and Chasiv Yar.4. Any talk of territorial concessions by Ukraine is meaningless. I have written many times that Ukraine cannot agree to them, if only because it would violate the Constitution. So any hypothetical document on a swap signed on Ukraine’s behalf would have no legal significance - and it’s only a matter of time before it is revoked.“Thus, demands for the handover of Ukrainian territories can only have one purpose - to make Ukraine renounce them.”Such demands cannot be accepted by European countries either. Allowing the transfer of territory as a reward for invading Ukraine would only encourage the aggressor to launch further invasions.5. This further confirms the point: whoever the U.S. president talks to last is whose talking points he echoes. Before the press conference, the last person he spoke with was Putin. Later, he will speak with other world leaders, and his statements will change. In Ukraine, people are used to this.6. As a result, no decisions were made. There were empty discussions on Russian topics that we are well familiar with. The meeting ended as a failure for the U.S., while for Putin, the very fact of the meeting is already a diplomatic victory. We will see soon what the next steps will be from the U.S., Europe, Ukraine, and Russia. My assessment of the meeting’s consequences, given a few days ago, remains unchanged.SourceAbout the author: Mykola Kniazhytskyi, journalist, Member of the Ukrainian ParliamentThe editorial board does not always share the opinions expressed by blog or column authors.
