Zelenskyy will reject Putin’s offer — the question is how

The left head — pro-Russian (Witkoff): “Putin has already made a wonderful concession; we need to reach an agreement immediately.”This is tempting for Trump because his goal is a Nobel Prize — meaning a quick peace, no matter at whose expense, as long as it’s not America’s (and new draconian sanctions against Russia could hurt the U.S. as well — this is one of the main reasons why Trump is so reluctant to impose them). The right head — not pro-Ukrainian, but more farsighted (Rubio): “The United States will not pressure Ukraine into giving up its territories to Russia as part of a peace deal.” Because Rubio understands that for the sake of a “quick Nobel” this year, the world will later pay a very high price, and the U.S. will be affected too."The United States may not pressure Ukraine, but Trump will definitely pressure Zelenskyy."That’s why both statements (Witkoff’s and Rubio’s) are last-ditch attempts to influence Trump’s position tomorrow. So the scenario seems clear: first, Trump wants to put full pressure on Zelenskyy in a one-on-one meeting, and then either confront the Europeans with a fait accompli “deal,” or lash out at Zelenskyy (whether there’s an actual reason or not) and either cancel the collective meeting or reduce it to the bare minimum, saying “I wash my hands of this, now you figure things out yourselves.”Personally, I would be glad if Zelenskyy remained silent throughout the one-on-one meeting, like a partisan under interrogation. But I’m sure the Europeans have given him better advice. The only problem is whether he’ll have the wits to follow it.Because it’s already clear that Zelenskyy will reject Putin’s proposal. The open and most important question is — how he will do it.SourceAbout the author: Oleksii Panych — philosopher, member of the Ukrainian Center of PEN International, blogger. The editorial board does not always share the opinions expressed by blog authors.
