Could Putin–Zelenskyy meeting bring Ukraine war closer to end?

Amazingly, after hours of talks with Donald Trump, European leaders want to talk to him again because they heard nothing concrete from the American president and his team. Indeed, one can discuss security guarantees for Ukraine, European participation, and American assistance, but what does it matter if Russia is not seeking to end the war itself? In fact, the main conclusion of recent days is that Trump has decidedly abandoned the idea of a ceasefire on the Russian-Ukrainian front in favor of Putin’s concept of a “comprehensive peace,” which, he suggested, could be negotiated even amid ongoing hostilities. Zelenskyy was forced to agree with Trump, Macron and Merz continue to advocate for a ceasefire, but this is irrelevant because Putin does not yet want either a ceasefire or an end to the war.A separate question: could a meeting between Putin and Zelenskyy bring an end to the war closer? So far, we see no signs that Putin has agreed to such a meeting, as this would have to be announced by the Kremlin, not the White House. However, I acknowledge that, to prevent Trump from taking any decisive action (if he is even capable of doing so regarding Russia) Putin will likely agree to such a meeting but refuse to make any decisions. A separate question is how long he will want to spend preparing for it.But the fog of uncertainty will undoubtedly dissipate. It will not be possible to hide the lack of agreements in Alaska forever. The only question is when this will happen and what Trump will do then — will he tighten sanctions against Russia and sell weapons to Ukraine, or will he go to Moscow to give diplomacy another chance?Source About the author.
