Scott Bessent said this in a comment to Fox Business."Regarding frozen Russian assets: I think it's part of the negotiations with President Putin (Russian dictator Vladimir Putin — ed.). So I don't think we should seize them immediately. It's a chip on the table during this big negotiating process," Bessent said.At the same time, he did not rule out that some or all of those assets could be used for Ukraine's reconstruction. The Treasury Secretary added that the U.S. needs more serious assistance from European partners regarding sanctions pressure on Russia. According to Bessent, Europe has not expressed a willingness to join potential secondary tariffs against the Russian Federation. Of all G7 members, only Canada has expressed readiness for such measures."The U.S. should not be expected to shoulder this alone. This war is in their backyard. They have a vested interest in ending it — just like we do. Of course, only President Trump has actually achieved progress on this issue, and Americans should not carry all the burdens themselves. So 400 million people in the EU who want this to end should also be part of the solution," he said.Belgian Prime Minister Bart De Wever stated that he does not support the confiscation of frozen Russian assets, the majority of which are held in the Belgian depository Euroclear.
