Polish President Karol Nawrocki gave an interview to LRT.lt.He spoke out against Ukraine joining NATO.Nawrocki stated that he believes a country at war cannot join NATO, as this would mean that both Poland and Lithuania would also be at war, and therefore the discussion should be postponed because it is simply impossible. Regarding the European Union, he noted that the accession processes of both Poland and Lithuania took many years and required consideration of many factors, including the impact on the economic and business sectors. He added that, in his view, it is also too early to discuss Ukraine’s EU membership.Nawrocki emphasized that, of course, he believes Ukraine should be part of civilization in the future - whether Latin or Western civilization - but in his view, the current discussion about Ukraine’s EU membership is premature. He also noted that, as President of Poland, he does not participate in such discussions and focuses more on what Poles have been doing since 2022.He recalled that “the Poles were the first to provide Ukraine with significant support in the form of military equipment and to welcome a million Ukrainians to Poland for social support.”He added that the Polish people believe they have fulfilled the lesson of solidarity as best as possible and continue to do so, feeling what Ukraine is experiencing today due to Russia’s attack. He also noted that they continue to uphold the principle of solidarity, while, of course, not trusting Vladimir Putin’s good intentions.Ukraine’s Foreign Ministry responded to the Polish president’s statementsThe Foreign Ministry stated that it operates on the understanding that Ukraine’s security future is inseparably linked to NATO, while its political and economic future is tied to the European Union. They added that the member states of the Coalition of the Willing recently agreed that Ukraine’s EU membership is one of the guarantees of security for the country. The ministry emphasized that Ukraine’s membership in these alliances is a guarantee of security not only for Ukraine but also for all of Europe and the Euro-Atlantic community. The Foreign Ministry stressed that this position has been confirmed in NATO and EU decisions, as well as in numerous statements by leaders of partner countries, including Poland. They emphasized that discussions about Ukraine’s future membership in NATO and the EU are not premature; on the contrary, they are strategically necessary in the context of Russia’s ongoing aggression against Ukraine and the entire European security system. The ministry noted that Ukraine highly values the leadership Poland has demonstrated since 2022 in supporting the country, including providing military assistance, ensuring the effective operation of a logistics hub for international aid to Ukraine, and hosting millions of Ukrainian citizens. They added that they are confident that Poland’s solidarity with Ukraine today is laying the foundation for their shared European future. Ukraine continues to work actively with all partners, including Poland, to achieve its strategic goal of full membership in the EU and NATO.
