Serhiy Kvit, the president of the National University of Kyiv-Mohyla Academy, stated this on Espreso TV."I see the future of Ukrainian higher education in creating a pool of world-class universities that would be competitive on the international stage and represented in the most influential rankings. This is extremely important. We need to raise the standard of universities. This means that we must clearly understand what a modern university is," said Kvit.According to the president of the National University of Kyiv-Mohyla Academy, Ukrainian educational institutions indeed provide quality education, but they cannot compete in international rankings due to a very weak scientific component, especially in research universities. This is a consequence of the Soviet model, in which science was separated from universities and placed into a separate system—currently represented by the National Academy of Sciences."Under such conditions, our universities, even the best and largest ones, are unable to compete in areas that determine rankings: publication activity, innovation creation, conducting research in modern laboratories, and so forth," Kvit noted. The president of the National University of Kyiv-Mohyla Academy added that Ukraine must change the profile of its universities—primarily classical and research universities—as well as develop a broad network of educational institutions."The minimum we must achieve is the creation of a pool of universities recognized in leading international rankings. This will be an important step towards integrating Ukrainian higher education into the global educational space," emphasized Kvit. The Ministry of Education and Science has introduced additional admission opportunities to universities for Ukrainians who finished schools or colleges in Poland with the results of the matura exam.
