Member of the European Parliament Dainius Žalimas stated this on Espreso TV."There are many mechanisms to strengthen security in the European Union. But if we talk about how to improve them, I see only two key details. First, it is really necessary to abandon the principle of unanimity. We see that states like Hungary sometimes create various obstacles, particularly regarding the European integration of Ukraine," emphasized Žalimas.According to the MEP, if we consider the prospect of the European Union as a union of more than 30 states, including Ukraine, Moldova, and other Balkan countries, the need to abandon the mechanism of unanimous decisions becomes obvious. Exceptions might only apply to final decisions, such as the start of military operations."Secondly, the European Union already has regulations on common defense. However, we lack an understanding of how to use this mechanism effectively. Some countries remain neutral. The Treaty on European Union also includes a provision on common defense, but it is still unknown how to apply it in practice," noted Žalimas. The MEP summarized that there are many mechanisms for strengthening security in the European Union, but the main thing is the presence of political will. It is precisely this that is lacking to make the necessary decisions. On Tuesday, October 28, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov stated that Russia allegedly has no intention of attacking NATO or EU countries and is ready to formalize this position in future security guarantees.
