Trump's big announcement may just be another warning to Putin

Judging by recent comments from Zelenskyy, Lindsey Graham, and many others — the statement could contain some very specific elements regarding Russia. The first is the "flow of weapons" mentioned by Graham.Although everyone is talking only about Patriots, in reality, there are plenty of offensive weapons we need. These include long-range missiles for F-16s, HIMARS, tanks, helicopters, and many types of armaments that Biden was afraid to give us.Who pays for it is not critical. Trump has managed to increase NATO members’ defense budgets, including support for Ukraine. The second is sanctions and Russian assets. Trump may announce new sanctions and the confiscation of assets. As for the latter — there’s a catch, since $20 billion in support has already been promised by the U.S. against these assets, but the assets themselves total only about $5 billion. Still, this would be a new sanctions narrative — not like Biden’s, which sounded tough but in reality delivered little. However, although I was one of the few who insisted on the inevitability of Trump turning against Putin, I believe this "big announcement" will be… just another threat to Putin. I think Trump will once again call on him to cease fire and begin a full-fledged peace process, or he will simply list everything mentioned above. That’s not as encouraging as the first option, but such a statement would carry little real weight — neither for Putin nor for us. For the Kremlin, Trump’s threats have lost their force; otherwise, Putin wouldn’t have snubbed him during their phone call. For us, these threats also have limited value, since weapons have already been unblocked — the only questions now are the scale of supplies and who pays. The process of moving in our direction is already underway and will only gain momentum, regardless of what Trump says. Because supporting us is an objective reality and the only viable choice. The only question is how extensive that support will be and how much pressure will be applied to Russia — because the answer to that will determine how long the war continues.SourceAbout the author: Viktor Andrusiv, political and civil society activist, analyst, and publicist. The editorial team does not necessarily share the views expressed by blog authors.
