On July 15, Mykola Kniazhytskyi, an MP from the European Solidarity party, said that Ukraine needs to focus on solving its demographic crisis — and argued that the recently passed law on dual citizenship will not contribute to that effort, Espreso correspondent Kateryna Halko reports.Parliament failed to pass a resolution that would have blocked the signing of the dual citizenship law. Now, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is free to sign it. However, Knyazhytskyi expressed doubts about the law’s constitutionality.“There are questions about whether this draft law complies with the Constitution,” he said. “But the bigger question is whether it will help bring back the millions of Ukrainians who were forced to leave the country — or help solve the demographic problem, as we were told when it was introduced. The answer is absolutely not.”Kniazhytskyi reminded the audience that he had introduced a separate draft law on demographic policy, which the parliamentary committee supported — but the bill never made it to the chamber floor.“The essence of that law is to care not only about those abroad or the refugees, but also about internally displaced persons. It’s about the foundations of Ukraine’s demographic future. After military threats, the demographic issue is one of the most urgent for our country. This is what the enemy wants — for Ukraine to become depopulated,” he emphasized.Kniazhytskyi acknowledged that raising financial support for childbirth is a positive step but noted that no country has ever solved its demographic challenges through cash payments alone. He argued that Ukrainians will return and have children only if the state genuinely cares for its citizens. In this context, he criticized the Ministry of National Unity, currently led by Oleksiy Chernyshov, who now faces corruption charges.“I proposed creating a single ministry at the level of a deputy prime minister — one that would deal with refugees, IDPs, and demographic policy. A real, effective institution that could help bring Ukrainians home. But no one seems interested,” he said. “We keep creating institutions to impress voters, only to dismantle them later — weakening the very institutional structures the country desperately needs, especially unity during wartime.”He concluded by stressing that the European Solidarity party is calling for serious action on Ukraine’s demographic crisis.Due to demographic processes, the number of working-age people in Ukraine has decreased by 40% compared to the "pre-war" year of 2021.
