The Center for Countering Disinformation reported the information.Online messages have circulated claiming an alleged attack on the Hungarian community in the village of Palad-Komarivtsi, involving the arson of a local church and a hateful message scrawled on the building. Russian channels quickly amplified the incident to push disinformation narratives about the “oppression of Hungarians” in Ukraine.“The goal of such information provocations is to inflame interethnic tensions, discredit the Ukrainian government, and create a pretext for foreign interference in Ukraine’s internal affairs,” the Center for Countering Disinformation said. The Center also recalled that Russian propaganda had previously spread false claims about the Ukrainian-Hungarian border, including alleged Ukrainian drones being shot down and reports of a Hungarian military buildup.Church arson and inflammatory graffitiOn July 16, an unidentified person entered the premises of the church in Palad-Komarivtsi, set fire to its door, and spray-painted a provocative anti-Hungarian slogan on its facade. Ukrainian law enforcement launched an investigation under Articles 161 and 194 of the Criminal Code, which cover incitement of ethnic hatred and property damage.Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán reacted strongly on Facebook, writing: "In Zakarpattia, a church was set on fire, and on its wall appeared the phrase: ‘Let Hungarians be put to the knife.’ Coercion, murder, arson, extortion, intimidation — all of this is happening to us, the Hungarians in Zakarpattia. We will not abandon you — you can count on us!”Open-source investigators from InformNapalm responded by warning that the incident appeared to be part of a coordinated information-psychological operation involving both Russian agents and several high-profile Hungarian politicians.Ukrainian officials call for calmMiroslav Biletskyi, head of Zakarpattia’s Regional Military Administration, also addressed the incident, urging locals to stay calm and not fall for “obvious provocations.”“This is yet another attempt to destabilize the situation in our border region. The enemy is trying to sow division, fabricate the illusion of ethnic conflict, and discredit Ukraine as a democratic and multiethnic state,” Biletskyi said.
