This was reported by the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, Verkhovna Rada Human Rights Commissioner Dmytro Lubinets, and the Security Service of Ukraine press office.“On July 28, Ukraine honors those who were executed, tortured, or died in captivity. This day is not only about loss. It’s about pain that doesn’t fade. About people who didn’t get to hug their loved ones. About crimes with no statute of limitations, crimes Ukraine must speak about to the world,” said Commander-in-Chief of the Ukrainian Armed Forces Oleksandr Syrskyi. He noted that systematic abuse of prisoners has become standard military practice for Russia. Russian soldiers torture, shoot, humiliate, and use people as human shields, propaganda tools, and leverage for blackmail. Russia violates the Geneva Conventions, the UN Convention Against Torture, the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court, and the core principles of humanitarian law. These are war crimes and crimes against humanity.“Olenivka, electric shocks in captivity, sexual violence, starvation, no medical care, no contact with family, these are not isolated incidents, but part of a deliberate system. We are dealing with an organized campaign of abuse against Ukrainian POWs. It’s not enough to observe, international bodies must act. We need pressure. Access. Oversight. Accountability... We honor those who died in captivity. Tortured. Killed. We remember. And we will not forgive,” Syrskyi said. The Human Rights Commissioner also stressed that Russia systematically violates international humanitarian law, leading to the deaths of Ukrainian POWs and unlawfully detained civilians.“Shootings, torture, executions – these are deliberate acts by the aggressor against humanity. We remember. And we keep fighting to bring back every single person still in captivity,” Lubinets said. The Security Service also noted that Russia tried to break Ukrainian soldiers but failed to destroy their dignity.“The names of the fallen will stay with us, in our memory, in our actions, in every bullet and shell fired at the occupiers. The Security Service is documenting Russia’s war crimes. Everyone involved in torturing Ukrainian soldiers will be brought to justice,” the agency added.Ukraine's Ground Forces said that on this day, Ukraine remembers all those who didn’t survive the cruelty of Russian captors – those who will never see Ukraine's victory, those who gave their lives for Ukraine.“We bow our heads in mourning for every victim of the enemy regime. We know thousands of Ukrainians are still locked in enemy prisons. We remember them. Ukraine is working every day to bring every citizen held in captivity home. We are waiting for all of them,” the military said. This day is meant to honor everyone who died in Russian captivity. The date was not chosen by chance: on the night of July 28–29, 2022, Russia carried out a brutal terrorist attack on a prison near Olenivka, where Azovstal defenders were held. At least 53 Ukrainian defenders were killed, and over 130 were wounded.
