Bloomberg reported the information.Slovenian Prime Minister Robert Golob, announcing the decision, said Palestinians “are dying because they are systematically denied humanitarian aid.” He stated that Israel’s actions constitute a serious violation of international law.As Bloomberg noted, this isn’t the first time Slovenia has acted against Israel ahead of other EU countries, trying to pressure Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to halt military operations in the Middle East. While Slovenia’s arms trade with Israel is nearly zero, the decision is mainly symbolic. At the same time, as the authors note, it could have a much more significant impact on Israel if other European countries were to introduce similar restrictions. In particular, Germany, Italy, and the United Kingdom have substantial defense contracts with Israel.“It is the duty of every responsible state to act, even if it means taking a step ahead of others,” said Golob, who has repeatedly called for concrete EU-wide measures against Israel. He noted that these efforts are being hindered by “internal divisions and disunity” in Brussels. It’s worth noting that last month, Slovenia became the first EU country to declare two Israeli politicians, National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir and Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich, personae non gratae. The Netherlands later followed suit.Earlier, UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer stated that his government would recognize Palestine as an independent state in September at the UN General Assembly session if Israel does not end the war in Gaza and take steps toward a peaceful resolution.
