This opinion was voiced on Espreso TV by Ukrainian military expert Dmytro Sniehyrov, co-chairman of the Prava Sprava initiative.“We are most likely moving toward a Korean-style end to the war,” Sniehyrov said. “Paradoxically, the proposals from the American side satisfy Ukraine. This is not about ending the war in the classical sense — signing a treaty, as Russia insists on — which would mean de jure recognition of the state border and the actual renunciation of territories. The U.S. side proposes freezing the conflict: recognizing the demarcation line but not the state border. These conditions would allow us to neutralize the main threats from Russia.”According to Sniehyrov, both Putin and other high-ranking Russian officials have previously argued, “Who will sign on behalf of Ukraine?” and “Zelenskyy is illegitimate,” adding that Ukraine should hold presidential elections — statements that delay any real steps toward ending the war.“By contrast, the U.S.-proposed scenario — recognizing the demarcation line, halting active hostilities, but refusing to acknowledge the loss of territory either de facto or de jure — would fully address Russia’s scenario about the illegitimacy of the Ukrainian government,” Sniehyrov said. “I emphasize that, from a historical perspective, such a scenario leaves open the possibility of Ukraine regaining its territory. France, for example, regained Alsace and Lorraine 40 years after German occupation, and Germany reunified 50 years after Soviet occupation. Scenarios like these would be the most ideal for us.”Trump earlier announced he would meet with Russian leader Vladimir Putin in Alaska on August 15.Two sources speaking to U.S. broadcaster CNN suggested that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy might take part in the Alaska summit, but emphasized that the U.S. and Russian leaders would first meet without him.
