The Wall Street Journal reported the information. An estimated 120,000 Ukrainians who fled to the U.S. over the past two years are set to gradually lose their humanitarian protection. These are Ukrainians who entered through the Uniting for Ukraine program, a temporary legal mechanism created under the Biden administration. They were granted a renewable two-year status, known as humanitarian parole, provided they found a private U.S. sponsor willing to host them. The Biden administration launched the program as a fast way to allow Ukrainians to resettle, since the traditional U.S. refugee process can take years. However, the approach had a downside — participants received only temporary status, leaving them vulnerable once it expires. Additionally, the government already has their home addresses, which could be used for arrests. After taking office, Donald Trump closed the program and stopped renewing work permits for those whose authorization was expiring.Overall, about a quarter of a million Ukrainians have arrived in the U.S. under Uniting for Ukraine. Those who arrived before August 16, 2023, remain under another program, Temporary Protected Status, but roughly 120,000 Ukrainians who arrived on or after that date will become undocumented once their humanitarian parole expires. On July 30, U.S. President Donald Trump stated that Ukrainian citizens who fled the war in their homeland and sought refuge in the United States will be allowed to remain in the country until the war ends.
