The Guardian reports. The British MPs and Ukrainian artists signed a letter emphasizing that Netrebko is a "symbol of cultural propaganda for the regime responsible for war crimes." The letter urges the London-based Royal Opera to exclude the pro-Putin singer from the new season’s program.Netrebko is scheduled to perform in Puccini’s Tosca next month. The letter suggests that by inviting her to perform leading roles while Russia intensifies attacks on Ukrainian cities and systematically seeks to erase Ukrainian culture, the Royal Opera is on the wrong side of history.“The Royal Opera now faces a defining choice: between status and responsibility, between profit and values, between silence and conscience. We urge you to remain, as you consistently have, on the ethical side of art – and of history,” the letter adds.Among those who signed the letter are Ukrainian writers Andriy Kurkov and Serhiy Zhadan, Oscar-winning director Mstyslav Chernov, chef and writer Olya Herkules. Former New Zealand Prime Minister Helen Clark, a group of British MPs, and French intellectual Bernard-Henri Lévy also supported the appeal.Ukraine’s First Deputy Foreign Minister Serhiy Kyslytsia, who organized the letter, said the Royal Opera should replace Netrebko with a performer "not associated with the criminal regime."
