The leader and founder of the band Los Іankovers, Ianko Bogdan Peñafort, shared his opinions on Espreso TV.“The best audience, without a doubt, is Ukrainians, both in Ukraine and in the diaspora around the world. Among foreigners, there is also a very positive reception of Ukrainian music, which many had hardly heard before. Through our songs, we try to show the existence of the Ukrainian nation, because music is a very powerful tool that helps generate sympathy for a country and its people,” noted Ianko Bogdan Peñafort. The musician explained that the band has four members, and only he has a connection to Ukraine, as his mother is Ukrainian from Kyiv and his father is Colombian. The other members are all Colombians who previously did not know Ukrainian songs or the language.“I simply introduced the guys to Ukraine because they had few opportunities to learn about a country that was hardly known in Colombia, at least before the full-scale war. Now many in Colombia know about Ukraine, and over 6,000 Colombians are even fighting here. When I met the band’s guitarist, Nicolas, in 2017 at the National University of Colombia, where we played in a Latin American folk ensemble, I sang him a Ukrainian song, and he really liked it. Later, we founded the band Los Іankovers, and all the members fell in love with Ukraine. It is worth noting that it is important to study your own language, because not all peoples in the world have the treasure that Ukraine has — its own language, around which to build national identity. In Colombia, we speak Spanish due to Spanish colonization, although the constitution recognizes over 80 indigenous languages, 95% of the population does not know a single word of them, which is very unfortunate. Ukraine still has a chance to preserve its language, and it can be done,” emphasized Peñafort.
