This was stated by military expert Ivan Kyrychevskyi of Defense Express during a broadcast on Espreso.“The more guided bombs for our aviation, the better. Recently, we saw reports about tests of a Ukrainian analogue to the UMPK [Universal Glide Bomb Kit]. It’s strange that no one is really asking: where is our own system to mount under the aircraft?” Kyrychevskyi said.According to him, Ukraine’s air force has an estimated daily need of 100 guided bombs. He commented on the BBC’s report that the U.S. would supply Ukraine with 2,500 GBU-39 bombs:“If we aim for that kind of consumption rate—at least 100 bombs a day—that would mean we could fight properly in the skies against the Russians for 20 days. Maybe stretch it out to a month," he said. "The GBU-39 bombs are great in that they can be dropped from over 40 km away. But they’re small—just 139 kg. That’s why they’re used for precise missions like destroying enemy observation points, command centers, or drone operator locations—not for large-scale strikes like taking out logistics hubs with heavy bombs,” the expert explained.Kyrychevskyi stressed that Ukraine needs many more bombs:“A key question is how quickly we’ll receive them. When Israel needed bombs for strikes on Gaza, it received hundreds in a single shipment — and dropped hundreds in one raid. Will we be that lucky? Will the U.S. release all 2,000 bombs at once from its reserves? Or will it be the usual scenario where stockpiles are limited and deliveries are stretched over time? Even so, this number of bombs is still good. But again, the absolute minimum need for our air force is 100 guided bombs per day—or 40,000 per year. And the Western defense industry simply isn’t keeping up with those volumes yet,” he concluded.
